Kickathon Challenge
Raising money for the Children in Need Appeal, members of Master Williams Tang Soo Do junior class were challenged to do 10,000 kicks in 1 hour. They met and surpassed this challenge completing 12500. The challenge was set by Master Williams who said he would Donate £200 if the challenge was met. The students, all of whom are under 12, were individually sponsored in the event. The total amount raised was over £700, far more than was expected. The photograph shows the students having kicked themselves into the ground.
International Tang Soo Do Federation - World Championship, Orlando, Florida
Representing the UK, 21 students from all over south Wales travelled to Orlando Florida to participate in the 2008 International Tang Soo Do Federation World Championship.
Within this party were 8 students representing Master Williams Tang Soo Club in Llantrisant. The 8 were relatively inexperienced none of them had taken part in such a prestigious championship where not only students from all over the world but the highest ranking Instructors would also be present. These included President and Founder Chun Sik Kim.
Master Williams commented that in sending his students he was expecting some success but for most the experience would stand them in good stead for the future, presently surprised was an understatement of the final results, of the seven students there was a tally of 11 gold medals, 5 silver and 1 bronze. Perhaps it should be explained that these were gained over four disciplines, fighting, hyung, breaking and weapons, which then were sub divided into age and rank categories.
The successful students were David Eynon in the 1st Dan Black Belt Division, Stephanie Eynon in the Young Ladies Cho Dan Bo Division , Hannah Bevan in the Ladies Red Belt Division, Darryl Collier in the young mans Cho Dan Bo Division, Roland Collier in the mens red belt division, Louise Dow in the ladies green belt division.
David took Gold Silver and Bronze, Louise took 2 Gold medals and a Silver, Hannah took 2 Gold medals and a silver, Roland took Gold, Darryl took Gold and two Silvers, the outstanding performance however was Stephanie who took Gold in all four disciplines
Louise however was the competitor her team mates recognised as achieving the major triumph as only three weeks before the event she had been diagnosed with an illness she is still fighting and yet put that behind her and was rewarded way beyond what she expected, all the students demonstrated excellent Tang Soo Do spirit but this was a superb example of not giving in, it has been said that the definition of a champion is someone who gets up even when the can’t, Louise in the eyes of her fellow competitors embodied this ideal.
Master Christian Hellings also a student of Master Williams but who has classes in his own right triumphed in the competition, but his instructor was more pleased with the performance he put in , testing for his 5th Dan. Immense is a word his instructor uses rarely but this was the adjective that described Master Hellings performance, his instructor commented he could not wait for the confirmation of the performance by the judging panel, and was convinced that he would soon be giving Master Hellings his promotion certificate.
The picture shows the victorious team celebrating a wonderful day for Welsh Martial Arts, all the students commented that the championship had opened their eyes to what was possible if you try.
